Biography
In only two short years, Thaddeus “Thad” Charles Young went from hitting the textbooks while leading his basketball team in scoring as a college freshman at Georgia Tech to hitting jumpers as the Philadelphia 76ers’ top pick in the 2007 NBA draft.
Born in New Orleans, Thad moved to Memphis when he was in fourth-grade. Basketball was in Thad’s DNA. He made his high school varsity team in eighth grade at Mitchell High School, was named to the all-state team three times, was named class AA "Mr. Basketball" in 2005, and was the MVP at the Jordan Classic All-American Game in New York.
Thad’s hard work and dedication landed him a basketball scholarship to Georgia Tech University in 2006, where he made an immediate impact on the Yellow Jackets’ team. As a freshman small forward, Thad led the team to a 20-12 record and a berth in the NCAA Tournament in 2007. He started all 31 games that season and scored a team-high tying 14.4 points per game, 4.9 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.29 steals. He also hit 39 three-pointers on 41.9 percent shooting in 31 games played.
After his freshman year, Thad entered the NBA draft and was selected as the 12th overall pick by Philadelphia. His love of the game, intellect, and athleticism helped him make a smooth jump from college to the NBA. In Thad’s rookie season, he quickly made an impact as a go-to scorer and shutdown defender for the 76ers. Among rookies, he was ranked highly in many categories, including points per game, steals per game, and offensive rebounds per game. Thad really made his mark in the postseason, leading the Sixers to an unexpected playoff berth and a first-round matchup with the Detroit Pistons. He was selected to the All-Rookie Second Team in 2007-08 and started for the sophomores in the Rookie Challenge during NBA All-Star Weekend in 2009. Thad scored 13 points on 6-of-7 shooting from the floor in the team’s 122-116 win over the rookies.
Considered a small forward, the 6-foot-8, 217-pound Thad has responded to the needs of his team by playing most of his first three years as an undersized power forward. He is consistently ranked third on the team in almost every category including points, minutes, field-goals, three-pointers, rebounds, and steals. On- and off-the-court Thad continues to establish himself as a core leader on his team and will launch The Young for Youth Foundation this season, providing children and young families with the tools, resources, and opportunities to live a healthy lifestyle and to excel in the classroom.
